As of 2017 New York state will require all smoke detectors sold to have a 10 year, non removable battery. This was signed into law by Gov Cuomo on Monday. The state will now prohibit the sale of any alarm that requires regular replaceable batteries. This new law is intended to ensure detectors continue to work without the need for businesses and homeowners to have to change batteries two times a year.

It has been proven that smoke detectors save lives. Since smoke detectors became a requirement in 1961, the deaths from fires have been cut in half.

After 10 years, business and homeowners will have to purchase a new fire alarm.
